ICAO Facility Tour

On August 24, 2026, a group from Ritsumeikan University's College of Policy Science, (15 students, 2 teachers) visited the Delegation of Japan to ICAO for a briefing and a tour of the ICAO premises.
The visit began with Ambassador Yamamoto, welcoming the group. Noting that this is the fourth visit from Ritsumeikan University (College of Policy Science) since 2023, he expressed his hope that this visit would be a fruitful training experience for the students. He also highlighted Asia's growing presence in the rapidly expanding international aviation sector, pointing the appointment of Council President Toshiyuki Onuma in January of this year as an example of Japanese staff actively contributing, a point that greatly captured the students' interest.
The first session focused on the Delegation of Japan to ICAO. Mr. Satoshi Oshima, Deputy Head of Mission, provided an overview of ICAO’s history alongside Japan's key initiatives within the organization. Following this, Ms. Shuki Okawara, Technical Expert, shared insights from her study abroad experiences and her daily professional role as a member of the Delegation.
In the second session, focusing on Japanese staff working directly at ICAO, Mr. Tetsuya Tanaka, Deputy Director of the Air Transport Bureau, outlined ICAO’s environmental initiatives and shared his 18 years of experience working at international organizations, enriching his presentation with meeting videos and personal anecdotes. The students engaged with thoughtful questions about life in Canada, as well as the challenges and joys of working at an international organization as a Japanese national.
Following the sessions, the group took a guided tour of the ICAO headquarters led by Ms. Nancy Park, Head of Communications, who walked them through the meeting rooms used by the Council and the General Assembly. The students asked engaging questions about ICAO’s public relations strategy and meeting operations. In response, Ms. Park detailed ICAO’s initiatives related to its three core pillars: “Safety and Security (Zero Fatalities),” “Environment (Net-Zero Carbon Emissions),” and “Connected Transport System”, as well as its communication efforts via social media.
